Cities and Memory
I recently discovered the Cities and Memory site, described as a ‘global field recording & sound art work that presents both the present reality of a place, but also its imagined, alternative counterpart – remixing the world, one sound at at time’.
You can use the site either as a user, to explore, or as a contributor, to add recorded or reimagined sounds. There is also a list of projects, one of which is a series of recordings of London Underground stations. This list is being added to at regular intervals.
Amongst the treasures you can find here are
- Bell sounds
- Birdsong
- Churches, temples and cathedrals
- Fairground sounds
- Harbour and ship sounds
- Museums and libraries
- Musical sounds
- Nightlife sounds
- Protest sounds
- Shops and markets
- Sports sounds
- Subterranean sounds
- Travel sounds
- Water sounds
One of my favourites is to select bell sounds from a sacred sounds map of locations in many countries.
