I thoroughly enjoyed Owen Knight’s new book ‘Conditions are different after dark’. It’s a dark gothic tale that combines elements of old English folklore, myths and superstitions and inserts these into an apparently ordinary modern genteel country setting, creating an atmosphere of growing menace. What should be a promising and exciting new chapter in young and successful couple Faith and James’s married life slowly turns more and more sinister. It’s a well-researched, well-crafted and totally gripping story that kept me in suspense throughout and was not short of unexpected twists. The historical references to events before and after the Restoration in the 17th century that had a direct bearing on the story are most interesting. This is definitely Owen Knight’s best book to date.
